10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About UEFA Champions League


1) The beginning:

The UEFA Champions League was founded in 1955, but the current format has been around since 1992. It was formally known as the European Champion Club's Cup.


2) First winner:

Real Madrid was the first team to ever win the Champions League in 1955-56. They are also the most successful team in the Champions League, winning the competition a total of 13 times: 1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1959-60, 1965-66, 1997-98, 1999-2000, 2001-02, 2013-14, 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18.


3) Spanish clubs:

Spanish football clubs have won the most competitions in Europe with 18 times. England come in second with 13 times, Italy comes third with 12, Germany has a win of 7,  Netherlands a win of 6 and Portugal a win of 4. France, Scotland, Romania and Yugoslavia all wining at least once.


4) ''THE CHAMPIONS!''

The origin of the most well known anthems in football, the Champions League anthem was written by Tony Britten in 1992 when the competition got rebranded. It is an adaption of George Frederic's Zadok the Priest.


5) Most finals lost:

Out of the 22 teams that were featured in the Champions League final, only one team have lost more finals than they have won, the team that lost most finals is Juventus with 7 finals lost and won 2 finals and second place goes to Benfica, they lost 5 finals and won 2 finals as well.


6) Biggest final win:

AC Milan's 4-0 win against Barcelona in the 1994 final remains the biggest winning margin in a UEFA Champions League final and Rossoneri were also involved in the highest scoring showpiece when they shared six goals with Liverpool in 2005 before penalties.


7) Back to back final wins:

Real Madrid made it three wins a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successive titles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.


8) Finals between teams from the same country:

There has been 7 finals between teams from the same country. In 2000 Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 at the Stade de France; three years later AC Milan defeated Juventus on penalties at Old Trafford; in 2008 Manchester United overcame Chelsea in Moscow, also on penalties; in 2013 Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley. Then in 2014, Real Madrid overcame Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time in Lisbon in the first European final between teams from the same city, and again beat their neighbors, this time on penalties, in Milan 2 years later. On 2019 Liverpool met Tottenham in the final which they beat them 2-0 to win their 6th Champions League title.


9) UEFA Badge of Honor:

Any club that wins a fifth Champions League title, or three in a row for the first time, receives the UEFA Badge of Honor. The badge is stitched on the players' uniforms and shows an image of the trophy for which all the clubs are competing, and the number inside the trophy represents the number of times that the player's club has won the trophy.

So far, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern, Liverpool, and Ajax are the most notable recipients of the UEFA Badge of Honor.

10) English teams were banned:

In 29th May, 1985 it was a dark day for the UEFA Champions League. This was the date of what would be known as the Heysel Stadium Disaster that resulted in 39 deaths and 600 injuries. Right before a game between Liverpool and Juventus, a group of Liverpool fans charged at the Juventus fans. It's disputed what it was that caused the entire situation to start, but it's clear that great damage was done. The Liverpool fans broke down a fence that had been separating the two sets of fans, and the Juventus fans ran back onto a terrace into a concrete retaining wall that collapsed - resulting in all the injuries and deaths mentioned before.

In retribution, those found responsible served fail time, and English clubs were banned from participating in the UEFA Champions for 1986-1991.
