1. 28th Feburary 1904:

Sport Lisboa e Benfica (SL Benfica) was founded on 28 February 1904 and was first named "Sport Lisboa"; the same year they merged with "Grupo Benfica" and changed their name into "Sport Lisboa e Benfica.


2. nicknames:

Image result for benfica crest historyBenfica are nicknamed "As Aguias" (The Eagles) which the eagle appears on the top of the crest, also their are nicknamed "Os Encarnados" (The Reds) due to their main shirt color red.


3. European success:

Benfica have one their first european title in 1960/1961 season, beating Barcelona 3-2 and their following season Benfica won their second european title beating Real Madrid 5-3.


4. the "curse" of Bela Gutmann:

Bela Gutmann was the manager that helped Benfica to win 2 secutive european titles but after the 1962 European Cup win he asked for a pay rise the Benfica board refused, then he started to curse the club in which he said "Not in hundred years from now will Benfica ever be champions of Europe again." Benfica went to lose 5 European Cup titles/UEFA Champions League (1963, 1965, 1968, 1988, 1990) and 3 UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League (1983, 2013, 2014) which makes Benfica losing all 8 European Cup finals.


5. UEFA Champions League appearances:

Benfica is has made 38 appearances in the Champions League which makes them second behind Real Madrid which is the only club that had made more appearances with 44.


6. Most successful club in Portugal:

Benfica is the most successful club in Portugal with 37 league titles, 26 Taca de Portugal titles, 7 Taca da Liga titles, 8 Supertaca titles and 2 European Cup (UEFA Champions League) titles.


7. The "Big Three":

 Porto and Sporting along with Benfica are the Big Three in Portugal, they are the most successful clubs in Portugal and never been relegated from the Primeira Liga or Liga NOS.


8. O Classico:

O Classico (The Classic) is one of the biggest games in the Liga NOS, its a match between Benfica and their arch rivals Porto and out of those games Porto have the most wins against Benfica with 94 wins, as for Benfica they beat Porto 88 times.


9. The Lisbon Derby (Derbi de Lisboa):

The Lisbon Darby is another big game in the Liga NOS, its a match between between two Lisbon clubs Benfica and Sporting, out of the those games Benfica have the most wins with 133 games against Sporting with 109 wins against Benfica.


10. Vitoria:

Image result for benfica eagleVitoria (Victory) is the name of the eagle which is the teams mascot. Before every Benfica football match at Estadio da Luz, it flies around the stadium and then lands on the club's crest (with out the eagle).
