10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Sporting CP
1) Foundation:
Sporting was founded on 1 July 1906, the club used to be called "Sport Club de Belas".
2) Derby de Lisboa:
The Lisbon Derby is game between two Lisbon clubs, Sporting and their main rivals Benfica. Their first meeting was in 1 December 1907 which Sporting beat Benfica 2-1. Sporting's biggest win against Benfica was 7-1 win occurred at the original Alvalade stadium on 14 December 1986.
3) Estadio Jose Alvalade:
Sporting's newest stadium (Estadio Jose Alvalade) opened its doors on the 6th of August 2003 and is a reflection of that original wish of the club's founding father, the first match in the new stadium was in 2003 pre season game between Sporting and Manchester United which Sporting won 3-1.
4) Cristiano Ronaldo:
Cristiano Ronaldo used to play for Sporting, through out his playing days as a Sporting player he scored 5 goals for the club, his most memorable match with Sporting was pre season friendly against Manchester United in 2003, which Sporting beat the Red Devils 3-1 and Ronaldo had an incredible game which resulted Sir Alex Ferguson signed the young Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting.

Sporting academy is famous for producing great players that will become ballon'dor winners, such players were Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Since Sporting is one the most successful clubs in Portugal alongside Benfica and Porto, the club won 18 Primeira Liga titles, 17 Taca de Portugal titles, 8 Supertaca titles, and 2 Taca da Liga titles. In european competitions, Sporting won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and The Lions reached 2005 UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League final against CSKA Moscow which they lost 3-1 and the worst thing is that the final was played in their home stadium.

Since its formation, on 1 July 1906, Sporting has had six crests, all of which have included the color green and lion. The current crest was adopted in 2001.

Alcochete is Sporting's training centre, on May 2018 during the training session for the Taca de Portugal final against Aves, mob of 50 strong stormed into the training centre and security guards were unable to prevent them from entering the centre and the group launched a brutal attack on the players and the coaching staff, beating them with belts, fists, and sticks. As a result seven results terminated their contracts after training ground attack but Bast Dost and Bruno Fernandes returned to the club.
